Art: necessity or luxury?
British art in an age of austerity
Taking inspiration from works in the Tate Collection
and Watercolour exhibition, we’ll consider the question of art and economy. Is art a necessity or a luxury?
Through iconic locations, performance and celebrity culture, come and explore the role of art in public realm across Tate Britain.
Curated by young people’s groups from Tate Britain, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Museums Sheffield.
I would also look into whether or not luxury is a necessity (what about a world with no luxury?)… And also at how contradictory these terms can sound: art and luxury, considering that the most passionate (true?) artists would produce art even in poverty… Unless we’re talking about art spectators in socio-economical culture/entertainment and not artists themselves? A necessity, definitely, art makes us humans (with pros and cons!). A luxury… ask the accountant?
