The Gallery was officially opened on 23rd June 1993 by HRH Charles Prince of Wales.
Its opening was attended by local dignitaries, artists, and other founding and principal benefactors.
Within its first six months of opening the 'Tate of the West', as it was referred to by the press, received 120,000 visitors, almost twice the expected number.
From its roots as a town visited by artists to paint the Cornish coast, it had become an important and popular destination for art lovers wishing to view modern art in the
surroundings and atmosphere that had inspired it.
